African diaspora in brazil
TREATMENT OF SLAVES
Slavery in Brazil was just like slavery across the world, de-humanizing, in-humane, and all the other negative terms. In Brazil, slavery started in 1888, most slaves were taken from Africa. Some examples of the treatment of slaves are that they were kept in small confined spaces, slaves mothers would be forced to give away their own babies and take care of their owners (https://library.brown.edu), because slaves owners will want to make slaves feel like they have no control and to not have any kind of knowledge so they won’t think about escaping. And since Brazil was the last country to abolish slavery which was in 1888, You could think that there was lots of death because Brazil still wanted to make more money
and resources.
RESISTANCE TO SLAVERY
However there was ways that slaves did resist their masters. Slaves stayed with their own traditions and rituals, even though they were not allowed to because owners would think that it was some kind of revolution. A ritual called candomble, a religious practice that connects the slaves to their gods because they wanted to stay true to themselves because they needed that hope so they can’t quit on living their life. Also another way slaves resisted their masters by doing a dance/fighting martial art called capoeira. It was a technique of self defence against slave masters because it looked like dancing slaves owners didn’t think much of it. Until slaves started to use capoeira when they choose to run away.
Race and racism still affects Brazil today by having mostly white advertisement and people calling each other different levels of skin color because, during slavery slaves were given levels of rank for their skin complexion. Also food that is from africa is still being cooked in brazil, because in africa people used a cooking technique of smoking fish and shrimp (http://www.foodbycountry.com/). Also african foods like quiabo was introduced to brazil and thousand years later african and brazilian culture is still practiced today, also even when slavery was abolished the people of brazil still see each other differently.
